The Field Is (Pretty Much) Set for the 2016 Kentucky Derby®

Posted by Carolynn Wilcox on Thu, Apr 21, 2016 @ 15:38 PM

Okay, so if you know anything about horse racing, you know that nothing is set in stone until the contenders line up at the gate in Churchill Downs®.  We’re 16 (long) days out from the Kentucky Derby® itself, and while anything could happen between now and then, here’s what we do know so far.

Possible Entries

You probably heard within the past couple of days that Cupid has withdrawn from the Derby due to breathing issues, and that Songbird has been pulled from the Oaks due to a fever.  These types of situations aren’t uncommon, and we can’t help but respect a trainer who values the health and safety of his or her charge more than winning a race.

If a horse (or several) were to withdraw before the first Saturday in May for any reason, we could see horses further down the line step in.  Fellowship, who placed third in the Florida Derby, currently occupies the 21st spot on the leaderboard.  Word on the street is that he’s been training at Churchill Downs and will be standing by if a spot opens up.  Adventist, who’s at #22 right now, will likely race in the Peter Pan Stakes if his camp doesn’t get the call to race in the Derby.

Laoban, who claimed fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes, is another possibility for the Derby, but his trainer is more likely to save him to run in the Preakness.  Dazzling Gem and Cherry Wine can also be added to this list as well - their trainers are working them as though they'll be lining up at the gate on May 7th.

Claim Your Seat at the 2016 Kentucky Derby®

It’s tough to say what will happen in the next couple of weeks, but one thing’s for sure: the 2016 Kentucky Derby will be legendary. Stakes Room ticket packages offer what no other package can – seating in the newly-renovated fourth-floor indoor space, plus access to the Stakes Room Balcony with a viewing platform the entire length of the room that overlooks the finish line.  Lavish hospitality is included, of course, and hotel accommodations and transportation can easily be added on to your package for a totally turn-key Derby experience.
