Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby: October Prep Races

Posted by Evan Chronis on Mon, Oct 28, 2019 @ 15:45 PM

The Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby® featured three big races in October, giving audiences another early look at potential Derby contenders as the world's best two-year-olds put points up on the leaderboard.

There was originally four races on the schedule for the month, but the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster Racecourse was cancelled due to inclement weather. The race would have awarded 10 points to the victor on the European Road.

Let's take a look at who earned points towards a potential trip to Churchill Downs®.

Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby October Prep Races

Champagne Stakes

When: October 5

Where: Belmont Park

Winner: Tiz the Law

Tiz the Law secured his first points on the Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby with a tantalizing performance in the final stretch at Belmont Park, securing his second victory in as many starts.

The win also earned the two-year-old a berth in the TVG Juvenile at the 2019 Breeders' Cup in November.

Breeders' Futurity

When: October 5

Where: Keeneland

Winner: Maxfield

After breaking slowly from the starting gate, Godolphin-bred Maxfield charged down the center of the track in the final stretch to claim the 2019 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

On the same day that Tiz the Law secured his place at Santa Anita Park, Maxfield earned a berth in the TVG Juvenile as well.

Qatar Prix de Jean Luc Lagardere

When: October 6

Where: Longchamp

Winner: Victor Ludorum (GB)

Goldolphin secured another October victory when Victor Ludorum bested the competition by a 3/4 lengths to claim the Qatar Prix de Jean Luc Lagardere at Longchamp.

The win was an impressive display of stamina for Victor Ludorum, who was making his third start in less than five weeks.
