You probably heard within the past couple of days that Cupid has withdrawn from the Derby due to breathing issues, and that Songbird has been pulled from the Oaks due to a fever. These types of situations aren’t uncommon, and we can’t help but respect a trainer who values the health and safety of his or her charge more than winning a race.
If a horse (or several) were to withdraw before the first Saturday in May for any reason, we could see horses further down the line step in. Fellowship, who placed third in the Florida Derby, currently occupies the 21st spot on the leaderboard. Word on the street is that he’s been training at Churchill Downs and will be standing by if a spot opens up. Adventist, who’s at #22 right now, will likely race in the Peter Pan Stakes if his camp doesn’t get the call to race in the Derby.
Laoban, who claimed fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes, is another possibility for the Derby, but his trainer is more likely to save him to run in the Preakness. Dazzling Gem and Cherry Wine can also be added to this list as well - their trainers are working them as though they'll be lining up at the gate on May 7th.
