Triple Crown™ Tuesday: Gallant Fox, 1930

Posted by Kristen Doolan on Tue, Jul 25, 2017 @ 12:53 PM

A Triple Crown™, an honor of a lifetime, is what every horse racing team strives for. Jockey, Trainer, Owner and everyone in between sets out at the Kentucky Derby® for their first win, enters the Preakness Stakes with high hopes, and then aims to complete the trifecta at the Belmont Stakes. What many don’t realize is how rare it is for a horse to mark his name in history as a Triple Crown™ winner. (So difficult that only 12 horses have claimed victory from 1919 – 2015.)

Derby Experiences is here to breakdown each victory, pedigree and team of the 12 Triple Crown™ winners for you in a 12-part series occurring the last Tuesday of each month. Starting with Sir Barton in 1919 and ending in American Pharoah in 2015, saddle-up, because here we go.

Gallant Fox, 1930

Gallant Fox was destined to make history when his racing career began in 1929 by winning 11 out of the 17 times he ran. Many watched as he started his three-year old season, hoping for greatness as he headed for the Triple Crown™ in 1930.

His charge towards history began at the Preakness Stakes, the first leg of the Triple Crown™ at the time. He took the lead early and won by ¾ lengths and rode that confidence into the Kentucky Derby® 2 weeks later. Gallant Fox would go on to win both the Kentucky Derby®, on a muddy Louisville track, and the Belmont Stakes in June, attracting quite a crowd at each.

Gallant Fox continued a winning career throughout 1930, later being described as a “super horse” and “horse of the year.” Retiring shortly after the 1930 racing season, Gallant Fox became the first Triple Crown™ winner to sire a second-generation Triple Crown™ winner, Omaha in 1935.
