Which Record-Breaking Horse Won the 1973 Kentucky Derby® and Became a Triple Crown™ Winner?

Winning the Triple Crown™ is the biggest honor that every horse racing team strives for. Jockey, Trainer, Owner and everyone in between sets out at the Kentucky Derby® for their first win, enters the Preakness Stakes with high hopes, and then aims to complete the trifecta at the Belmont Stakes. What many don’t realize is how rare it is for a horse to mark his name in history as a Triple Crown™ winner, only 12 have succeeded!

Derby Experiences is breaking down each victory, pedigree and team of the 12 Triple Crown™ winners in a 12-part series. Starting with Sir Barton in 1919 and ending in American Pharaoh in 2015, saddle-up, because here we go. This week’s Triple Crown™ winner is the fastest horse in horse-racing history.Blog Post (2)-2.png

Secretariat, 1973

Secretariat broke the 25-year drought by becoming the first Triple Crown™ winner since 1948. He won 7 out of the 9 races he participated in and became the first Horse of the Year as two-year-old.

As a three-year-old, the thoroughbred did not disappoint going into the 1973 Kentucky Derby®. Secretariat was not in the lead until the final stretch, as Shecky Greene and Sham held the lead for much of the Kentucky Derby® race. As they entered the homestretch, Secretariat caught up and clinched the title of the 1973 Kentucky Derby® winner. He won in record breaking time 2 ½ lengths ahead of runner-up Sham.

Following the Kentucky Derby®, Secretariat won the Preakness Stakes just a few seconds under the track record with ease.

Coming in to the Belmont Stakes, Secretariat was a clear favorite but his jockey, Ron Turcotte, expected it to be a close race with Kentucky Derby® runner-up, Sham. However, the Derby runner-up exuded too much energy in the beginning of the race trying to keep pace with Secretariat and ended up finishing in last place.

Once Sham had retreated, Secretariat broke away from the rest of the pack to win the Belmont Stakes by an unheard of 31-lengths ahead of the runner-up. This result was something that horse enthusiasts and spectators had never seen before, and Secretariat was rightfully named the ninth Triple Crown™ winner!
